Hayes and Frazier in successful night
By M. Satya Narayan, Staff Reporter
Abu Dhabi : Trainer James Frazier Jr. and jockey David Hayse combined to notch up a smart double including the First Gulf Bank Abu Dhabi Fillies Classic here last night at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club.
Hayse first scored a good win on top weight Haifa'a in a Maiden Handicap and later won the feature event, the Abu Dhabi Fillies Classic on Atlaal.
Trainer Gillian Duffield also scored a double with wins on Mabrum and Djaiman De Layre.
The 8-furlong Dh 100,000 Fillies Classic was hit by tragedy when Aghlahum, one of the favourites, stumbled midway through and jockey Willie Supple was left strewn on the track. Aghlahum had to be put down while Supple, who had won the previous race on Mabrum managed to escape without much damage.
Atlaal, which apart from Aghlahum and Sabahat, was among the trio who had a start earlier while all other eight runners were making their debut. After AF Estimraar and GRP Roma Ghantoot did the early running, Hayse managed to take Atlaal to the front on the home stretch. Though the Djel Bon filly looked to be tiring, Hayse managed to keep her in front of a fast-finishing Al Khawssaa W'rsan and La Aref.
After Richard Smith had steered the Mohammad Al Darmaki-trained AF Kanz to a win in the opening race, Frazier and Hayse won the second on Haifa'a.
The popular Supple gave Gillian Duffield a good win on Mabrum, the 5-year-old grey gelding defying the top weight to beat Al Sourour with a strong finish.
